How to choose your Vision Board Pictures right

Creating a Vision Board that truly speaks to you and makes you feel incredibly excited about the year to come can be overwhelming at first.

To help you choose the very best Pictures for your Vision Board, here are my Top 7 Tips for choosing your Vision Board Pictures right.

What you can find in this post about vision boarding:

1. Get clear on what you want in every area of your life

2. Focus on the feeling

3. Save/Pin everything

4. Find your theme

5. Throw in some Quotes

6. Choose “focus pictures”

7. Trial and Error

1. Get clear on what you want in every area of your life

Knowing what you want is an essential first step in finding the right Vision Board pictures. It sets a positive mood and allows you to focus on what’s most important to you.

My advice would be to first just write down all things that come to mind when thinking about the next year. Everything you want gets written down.

In a second step and in a different list, go over every area of your life and think about what it might be that you want for your career, health, relationships, etc., that you haven’t thought of before.

My third step is always to focus on an internal growth aspect that I want to accomplish, whether that is being more confident in my choices, loving my body completely, showing up as my whole self, or anything else.

To guide you through this process of finding the goals that mean the most to you. Here are a few central Questions to ask yourself:

1. What are my most important goals for next year?
2. What experiences do I want to have had in a year’s time?
3. What do I want to have achieved by this time next year?
4. Where do I want to have been/what do I want to have seen by this time next year?
5. How do I want to feel about myself in the next year/in a year’s time?

2. Focus on the feeling

When answering the questions above about what you truly want, it is easy to get caught up in theory, thinking about what we “should” accomplish or have within the next year.

That’s the wrong way!

To create a Vision Board that will truly inspire you, you must choose the goals that make you feel the most excited.

Based on that, look at the Pictures that come up when searching for your goals on the internet and focus on the feeling again.

For example, you really want to travel to Rome next year.

There are a million pictures of Rome: Streets, sights, restaurants, and many, many more.

Not every picture will be right for your Vision Board because they don’t all provoke the same feeling. Everyone has a different reason for travelling to Rome and a different vision of how the trip will look.

Choose what feels right for you; it will make looking at your Vision Board Pictures that much more enjoyable!

3. Pin everything!

At first, it might be difficult to know directly which picture sparks the most joy and excitement for a specific goal.

My advice here is to pin (on Pinterest) or save them all. Every Picture that makes you feel good.

Then, when you feel like you have browsed and saved/pinned enough, look through all the Pictures again. I normally stretch this process over days or even weeks because I always find new pictures and new feelings.

When you look through all of your saved/pinned Pictures again, decide which ones get you the most excited about the goal or experience and pick those.

It has happened to me more than once that I saved/pinned the same Picture multiple times during my search without noticing. That is always a great indicator that the Picture speaks to you as well.

4. Find your theme

Once you have chosen your Goals and favourite Pictures, take a step back and try to find an underlying mood or theme where they overlap. A desire that shows in all of your choices for your vision Board.

There is no limit to what that theme could be. A few of my recent ones are self-love, Growth, Confidence, and Freedom. But it could also be: Travel, Family, Relaxation, Change, Wealth, or many, many more!

Finding this underlying theme always helps me to pick out my final Pictures for my Vision Board from my favourites.

I also decide on a Background colour based on my theme.

5. Throw in some Quotes

Having pictures as visual reminders of your goals on your Vision Board is amazing all by itself, but I have found that adding some writing in the form of sentences, lyrics, or Quotes made my Vision Boards feel even more exciting to me.

The written word amplifies all that the Pictures represent by displaying it in letters.

The same rules apply for writing as for Picture: Focus on the feeling and follow your theme.

There is no rule, however, on what kind of writing or how much writing there is supposed to be. Do what feels right, even if it means no writing at all. These are all just tips from my experience and what feels right for me. There is no saying all of this will feel right for you as well.

6. Choose “focus pictures”

When thinking about assembling your pictures to create a Board, it is easiest to choose some “focus pictures” first. These are the pictures that are non-negotiable. They make you feel so excited, and the Goal or experience is most important to you.

These are the pictures; all others will be arranged around.

I would recommend placing your “focus pictures” in the center or the corners of your Vision Board because that is probably where you’ll look first when looking at it.

I personally always put my favourite Quote in the center, so my “focus pictures” go into the corners, but that is completely up to you!

7. Trial & error

After going through all the steps above, there is still a lot of trial and error involved when arranging all the Pictures and Quotes to make your Vision Board.

But let it be fun! There is no need for perfection (which is never attainable anyway!), and let the two main points from this post guide you to creating the best Vision Board for you:

Focus on the feeling and follow your theme.
