Studying is the only thing that exists in exam phases.
You enter this weird vacuum where time has no more meaning and days merge seamlessly.
It is difficult in that state and situation to take care of your health, mental and physical.
But please remember that maintaining healthy habits is as important for your exam success as studying is; yes, you heard me right!
Here are 7 mental health reminders for your exam phase that will help you stay more focused, study better and stay somewhat sane during this challenging time.

1. Honour your study-clock
It’s not a myth that everyone has a different body clock.
To study smarter, not harder, it really helps to listen to that “study-clock” and plan in your sessions during your most focused times of day.
That leaves the hours you can’t focus as well anyway free for other things, while getting just as much done
2. 30 Minutes won’t matter
“Making” yourself study 30 Minutes longer when you are already tired or burnt out from the day is not helping!
The things you remember from this 30 Minute session, you could have done in 5 Minutes the next day.
Please honour your body and its needs and know that in the end, these 30 Minutes are not what will tip the scales in your favour in the exam!
3. Be kind to yourself
It’s easy to beat ourselves up on the unfocused, tired and distracted days. We think we “should” be able to study better. But we are not machines, no matter how much we try to act like one during the more stressful times in life.
Beating yourself up for being distracted and unfocused is not helping!
Be kind to yourself, you are trying your best, and that looks different every day!
Stretch, breathe and then do what you can with how you feel right now.
4. Take the break!
When struggling to climb the huge mountain of study notes, lectures and books to revise, it’s easy to feel like using every second must mean studying without breaks.
But breaks are important!
They help information settle in our brains and make us ready to take on the next task.
5. Food is energy
When I am stressed, I forget to eat. I tend not to be hungry. At that point, I have to make myself eat.
If you feel somewhat the same or find yourself eating the same pasta-pesto meal every day, please remember that Food is energy.
Our body needs all the nutrients and vitamins it can get to help our brain work in the very best way.
6. Movement matters
Studying all day can be extremely tiring. But there is a difference between being mentally and physically tired.
Moving your body helps to tire you out physically after a long day of sitting at a desk. It might even help you sleep better through it.
It can help clear your mind after a long day of cramming information into it.
7. Sleep is vital
Sleep is often sacrificed easily when time feels limited. We think that staying up late or getting up early (depending on your body clock) will make us more productive because we have more time.
That is not the case!
Good and enough sleep is vital to process information and memorise it properly.
It helps to have a fresh start and a clear mind in the morning, ready to tackle another day of studying.
